BID Awarded Keep America Beautiful – Cigarette Litter Prevention Program Grant

The BID is excited to announce that we have been awarded a Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) Grant for 2015! This is the 6th CLPP grant the BID has received since 2009. This year, the BID is planning to target cigarette litter in popular smoking areas in the 700 block of 8th Street, SE, and in the 300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. We will be purchasing and installing individual AshGuard units (sample photo at right). These AshGuard units have a large capacity to hold hundreds of cigarette butts, keeping butts off the streets and sidewalks and making Capitol Hill cleaner than ever.
Later this month, the BID will be performing a cigarette butt count in the CLPP target areas. Once the AshGuard units are installed later this spring, the “men in blue” will be responsible for cleaning the discarded butts from the units while on their assigned routes. The BID will then perform a followup cigarette but count in the summer to determine the effectiveness of the AshGuard units.Last year, our CLPP program saw a 38% decrease in cigarette butt litter around the Potomac Avenue Metro Station after three months of having ash tray lids installed on the trash receptacles there. We expect to have similar results again this year. After purchasing the AshGuard receptacles, any remaining funds from the CLPP grant will be used to place a public service announcement (PSA) in local publications. For more information about the CLPP program, contact Kelly Maslar at 202-842-3333 ext. 10 or kmaslar@capitolhillbid.org.
