Artistic Bike Racks Coming to Eastern Market

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Councilmember Tommy Wells, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Executive Director Gloria Nauden, and District Department of Transportation Director Gabe Klein gathered at the US Department of Transportation Southeast Plaza Monday April 27, 2009 to celebrate the completion and impending installation of six winning bike rack designs from the “DC Creates Public Art Artistic Bike Rack Contest”. Four of each design were produced by DDOT and will be installed throughout the city.

The design proposal invited local artists to enhance standard bike racks and create unique designs that incorporated the artists’ interpretation of the “DC experience” into their design as well as consider particular locations for the placement of the work. The intent of the project is to encourage more people to use bicycles and increase the number of bike racks throughout the District that are both functional and artistic.

The artists whose designs were selected are Matt Barinholtz, Karin Edgett, William Gordon, Carolina Mayorga, Melinda Merinsky and Joe Sutliff. All six bike rack designs were displayed at the dedication event.

Look for bright green racks to be installed at Eastern Market with the new streetscape, soon.
