Rehabilitation of Infrastructure Surrounding Eastern Market

Rehabilitation of Infrastructure Surrounding Eastern Market

Work to Begin Monday, November 24

(Washington, D.C.) The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to begin the rehabilitation of the infrastructure surrounding Eastern Market on Monday, November 24, 2008. This comprehensive project will include work on the streets, sidewalks, gutters and catch basins around the historic landmark, which is currently being rebuilt following a devastating fire.

The market is currently open in temporary quarters, and to minimize the impact on businesses in the area DDOT will conduct the rehabilitation work in phases. The initial phase in November will focus on four storm water catch basins near the market. This work is expected to have minimal impact on vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area.

No work will be conducted in the month of December at the request of the community so as not to disrupt the holiday shopping season at the market. The project will then resume on or about January 6, 2009, and will include the following work:

  • The Removal and replacement of existing curbs with granite curbs and the resetting or adjustment of existing granite curbs, and the installation of brick gutters.
  • Preservation of historic blue stone curbs fronting Eastern Market (on the north side of C Street and west side of 7th Street). For the balance of the project, historic blue stone curbs shall be preserved and for areas where blue stone curbs do not exist, five inch granite curbs shall be installed to match the shape of the historic curbs.
  • Replacement of existing sidewalks with brick sidewalks
  • Installation of approved manhole covers.
  • Replacement of existing soil in tree spaces with structural soil mix.
  • Replacement and installation of wheelchair/bicycle ramps including walking surface with truncated domes.
  • Installation of bicycle racks at locations within the boundaries of the Eastern Market Streetscape Project. The locations will be determined by EMCAC and DDOT during construction.
  • Milling and overlaying of 7th Street, SE between Pennsylvania and North Carolina Avenues.
  • Installation of permanent lane markings and signage by the contractor.
  • Landscape work including the replacement of certain trees, improvement of tree spaces and landscape modification adjacent to Hines school. Where possible, tree boxes shall be expanded to the present DDOT standard of 4 feet by 9 feet.
  • Performance of street light work, mid-block. The Contractor shall install Washington globe streetlights in accordance with the contract plans. Overhead lighting at intersections will take the form of teardrop pendant lamps, as opposed to the cobra-head variety.
